Tonight...I dry fired a bow

I have never in my life once ever done this, nor did I think I would ever do such a thing (I can hear my grandmothers saying I'm not invincible as I type this).

I was looking over my girlfriend's bran spankin ass new Mathews Outback, fresh out of the factory, she won the bow at the R100 shoot this year. Today we had gone to get the rest and peep sight put into the bow and I was adding pink accents for her, mainly painting the peep pink and the kisser pink. And for some reason I felt compelled to draw the bow with my bare hands, like I have a hundred other times since the bow came in the mail last week...hands were sweaty and there she went! BAM!

Weirdest, loudest sound in the world as my heart sank to my ass when I saw the string having off the bow. Luckily I was able to check over the limbs, back them down a few turns and put the string back on the bow, the peep however did fly right out of the bow.

I guess my question is.....

Has anyone else who is as anal about bow hunting and archery as I am ever done this?

And.....

If there isn't any noticeable cracks in the limbs or torn strings, should I be extremely worried?

Obviously I'm going to take it to a pro shop to get it checked out but I guess I'd like to ease my mind a little bit after my most bonehead moment of my archery career.....

Congratulations to Jerry Lewis on his 60th year of hosting the MDA telethon.
Through the years there have been over 14 different telethons for causes in America, all but one have gone by the wayside: Jerry and MDA are still going strong.
Over the years there have been many hurricanes, tornado's, droughts, recessions and other downturns in the economy...but every year he only hopes for $1 more, and we do it and better...for his kids. What a Country.
There are many worthy organizations out there deserving our support, the MDA is one I've chosen as mine for the past 40 years.
I'm thankful for having raised two healthy sons to adulthood, however each had classmates with MD years ago down in Rochester...

Those classmates are no longer with us, but the MDA was an important part of their lives.

Please hug your kids, and consider a donation of any size.

The national phone number is: 1 800 FIGHT MD
Online it's: www.MDA.org

A lady Canadian libertarian wrote a lot of letters to the government, complaining about the treatment of captive insurgents (terrorists) being held in Afghanistan National Correctional System facilities.

She received back the following reply:

"National Defense Headquarters
MGen George R. Pearkes Bldg,
15 NT 101 Colonel By Drive Ottawa ,
ON K1A 0K2
Canada

Dear Concerned Citizen,

Thank you for your recent letter expressing your profound concern of treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists captured by Canadian Forces who were subsequently transferred to the Afghanistan Government and are currently being held by Afghan officials in Afghanistan National Correctional System facilities.

Our administration takes these matters seriously and your opinions were heard loud and clear here in Ottawa .

You will be pleased to learn, thanks to the concerns of citizens like yourself; we are creating a new department here at the Department of National Defense, to be called ‘Liberals Accept Responsibility for Killers’ program, or L.A.R.K. for short.

In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to divert one terrorist and place him in your personal care.

Your personal detainee has been selected and is scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence inToronto next Monday.
Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of complaint.

It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers.. We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommend in your letter.
Although Ahmed is a sociopath and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his ‘attitudinal problem’ will help him overcome these character flaws.

Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences.

We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling.
Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers.
We advise that you do not ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group.

He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with you or your daughters (except sexually) since he views females as a subhuman form of property.

This is a particularly sensitive subject for him and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that he will recommend as more appropriate attire.

I’m sure you will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the burka over time. Just remember that it is all part of ‘respecting his culture and religious beliefs’ as described in your letter.

Thanks again for your concern. We truly appreciate it when folks like you keep us informed of the proper way to do our job and care for our fellow man.
You take good care of Ahmed and remember we’ll be watching.

Good luck and God bless you.

Cordially, Gordon O’Connor
Minister of National Defense"

The more my kid shoots his X10, the better the gun gets. (He is improving as well, but that's the point of it all). We have a lot of air rifles in the house, but this X10 impresses the hell out of me. We have guns that cost 1 1/2 - 2 times as much that won't throw the groups this gun does. And it does it with virtually any pellet, 6.9 to 8.3 grains, all that changes is the point of impact vertically, consistent 5 shot groups at 75 feet you could cover with a quarter. Nice glass in the combo as well. It's a hefty 7# + gun, so younger shooters will likely need a rest at all times, but with the groups this thing is capable of it will help instill good shooting habits and form by rewarding them with accuracy.
If you are looking for a high performance airgun, at around $175.00 this combo is a great deal.

Hey, I'm a 16 year old guy, who love the great outdoors...unfortunately my legal guardian, my grandma is really afraid of guns, though she recently let get two guns, one of which is an old Remington 870 riot shotgun that belonged to my dad before he died. I've only gone hunting once, with my Uncle, who is my dad's younger brother, that was last year, and we were rabbit hunting...I had a lot of fun even though we didn't see anything except for one stupid crow. Anyway I'm eager to start hunting this year, and I'm also becoming interested in trapping. In addition to the old shotgun I mentioned I also own a Mosin-Nagant M91-30 that was made in 1942...and it still works beautifully, and is in great condition :D I'm also probably going to get a .22LR rifle soon since, apparently my grandma doesn't seem to be afraid of .22 caliber rifles. If you know of any good areas for small game hunting/trapping in the SW Lower Peninsula, particularly around Baroda, and especially for coyote hunting/trapping, that me and my Uncle might be able to use, I'd really appreciate it.

· Michigan’s gun hunting is in the peak of the rut! Why wouldn’t you mimic other states like Iowa, Kansas or Ohio with the December gun season? At least for the Lower Peninsula.
· Any guy can go out and shoot 2 bucks in a season. Why wouldn’t you (at least temporarily) move to a 1 buck rule and allow a hunter to harvest more does? Michigan has one of the highest hunter densities and still chooses to allow 2 bucks, what a joke.
· Michigan ignores & resists infinite ideas & laws to improve the deer quality. BUT chooses to adopt a new law like allowing Crossbows which will further degrade the hunting. Of any proposal out there, they pick the one that makes the hunting worse. Yes, it's debatable BUT out of all the possible laws out there- they didn't go with one to greatly enhance management.
· The folks who represent the Status Quo failed management practice silence the opposition. Folks, you are far greater in number than the DNR and the “Super Old Schoolers” would like you to believe. There are a large and growing number of you that want to change the state. I believe you are actually in the majority but made to believe you are not. You need to realize there’s far more of you than the DNR would lead you to believe. The Status Quo folks would also love for you to believe this issue is a lost cause.
· The serious hunters are leaving the state in droves to hunt neighboring states while very few folks travel to Michigan for quality hunting. In other states they have to limit how many Non-Residents come to hunt. Michigan couldn’t pay hunters from other states to come there for a quality hunt.
· Bow hunters get very few days of good bow hunting. The 1st part of November is really the only decent part of the Michigan season. Most years the weather eliminates several of those key days (too warm or rains). With a December gun season, bow hunters will have a solid month of great hunting.
· Michigan hunters have far less a voice on how their DNR (their EMPLOYEES) manage the deer herd VS. the far more powerful & influential insurance industry. Who should be making the majority of decisions and who should the DNR be listening to? Its employer- YOU, the hunters and residents of this state OR the Insurance industry who doesn’t care about hunting, environment, herd quality, etc? The insurance companies only care about the bottom $.
· Michigan tax payers accept and tolerate an inept, ineffective and irresponsible Governmental Department. The DNR is failing you and many other states would never tolerate this & demand change. Why aren’t you demanding change? You need to organize, speak out and demand change or your state will continue to be run by an incompetent DNR and your hunting will continue to be a complete joke.
Questions to ask:
· How many more years will you tolerate your tax paid DNR Deer Managers managing the state in the poorest fashion imaginable? I would have to get creative to think of laws and regulations to make the state any worse.
· Why is the state not adopting ANY laws and regulations to drastically improve the hunting? Likely, no one has any courage to stir the waters and ruffle any feathers. You folks need a NEW LEADER with COURAGE and vision!
· Who brags about Michigan’s hunting? I cannot recall anyone EVER bragging about how great the state is. I don’t know ANYONE who doesn’t complain about how bad it really is. Even folks who defend the status quo complain about how bad the hunting is.
· Do folks who haven’t been to other states realize they have the worst hunting in the country in their home-state? Maybe it’s like folks who are content skiing in Michigan because they’ve never been to Colorado or Utah. Unfortunately, most folks know what a joke the state is. Fortunately, you could transform Michigan hunting unlike changing the skiing. My other analogy for folks who haven’t hunted other states is: they are like “Neo”, trapped in “The Matrix” and don’t realize there’s a whole different world to hunting- this time the other world (other states) is far better!
· Why won’t people change? In varieties of cases- most feel they can’t change anything without a high-level DNR mandate. They are correct- very little will change without the DNR getting their heads out of the sand. The only hope for the state is to fire the DNR Deer Managers and get someone in there to take the reigns of revolution and change! The state needs a total make-over of laws and regulations from real leadership. Thankfully the younger generation of hunters is actually starting to fight for these issues!
· Why are the numbers of Co-op’s, trying to create far better deer hunting, growing in numbers? They are popping up everywhere so they can take management into their “own hands”. (Co-ops are groups of hunters and landowners getting together to make their own standards, rules, goals and regulations to manage a specific area). They know the DNR is an utter failure. Co-ops will improve certain sections of the state to some extent BUT the real change needs to happen at the State/DNR level.
· Could Michigan be a good Deer Hunting State, especially for big bucks and a well balanced doe population? YES!!!! You have the soil, genetics, climate and endless habitat. Right now you don’t have bucks that live. Currently a buck can’t reach its potential in Michigan BUT that can change!!!
What we would do & what needs to be done:
· Gun Season does not begin until after the rut. Bucks will not be the stupidest animals in the woods come December 1 (only 2 weeks later) and many more young bucks will survive.
· Manage Doe Harvests by a county to county basis. Different quotas, possibly different doe seasons, tag allotment, etc by each county. Established from previous harvest results and deer population survey. It will also depend on hunter opinion & satisfaction by each county. (Yes, currently there is SOME effort and management at this level. Not near what there should be). Phone check in for deer harvests is another option. This carries merit to gain valuable management/harvest data. Lastly, deer hunters and residents should decide county by county deer numbers- NOT insurance companies. The residents & public own the deer - not the insurance companies.
· One Buck per hunter.
· Crossbow season would be removed. I wouldn’t fight to the bitter end on this issue BUT I’d roll back to 2008 law on this issue if possible. I realize you do need to pick your battles & this would not be #1 but I would push for it.
· We would host regional forums to get hunter input & recommendations each year. This will be done with a yearly public meeting in each region AND we will work to create an internet site for hunter input and discussion. A region would either be ONE county or a few counties in a convenient location- there would be a volunteer representative for each county or region.
· Make sure the current DNR Deer Managers either have new jobs, change their incompetent ways or are fired. At a minimum- they are out of power. They had their chance and have gone down in shameful failure. They have failed the residents of this state.
· Stop listening to the SAME FOLKS, with the same old argument, who have argued against this for years! Keep listening to them and you’ll continue to be in the same place- LAST PLACE! Your state will continue to be managed worse than ANY state in the Midwest if you keep listening to the same case of: “If it’s brown it’s down”, “A trophy is in the eye of the beholder!” (from the guy who has 36 racks in his garage of 1&1/2 old bucks), “I just hunt for meat” (killing all 1&1/2 olds instead of does), “Rifles during the rut are GREAT!”, “Things will never change”, “This is a lost cause!”, “2 bucks per person in the highest hunter density state is the way to go!”, etc, etc. Listen to the same folks with the same argument and you’ll be in the same shameful position for management!
· Create a Michigan Deer Hunter’s organization that will stand up and fight for these issues and fight for making Michigan’s deer herd what it should & could be. This will be a non-profit organization with members of the public and it will have representatives to stand up for your issues.
· Baiting is permanently GONE!
· We will turn this state into a place the neighboring states ENVY and want to come to. NOT A STATE THE RESIDENTS RUN FROM & NON-RESIDENTS LAUGH AT IN DISGUST. Others will see Michigan as a success in 5 years after all this is implemented.
· We will bring in revenue of Non-Resident’s who want to come here and hunt. This will help bolster the hurting Michigan economy.
· We will let Michigan reach its potential. Whatever that is, it will be achieved. I assure you, it is light-years away right now. You will get there!
· We will make sure EVERYONE will see bigger bucks, a healthier deer herd and a balanced deer herd for age, ratio and the habitat.
· We will improve Michigan’s Public land by allowing access by lottery and time allotment. There’s much more detail on this BUT we will end the fact that “Public Land Sucks!”
· The last thing we will do is prepare for the backlash this will create! The individuals whose jobs I am talking about will fight back with fury! They are going to fight back using the resources & organization your tax dollars paid for. They’ll use the DNR’s name BUT these folks need to go and the DNR needs a new face, core and strategy. Individual support of yours is the only hope to fight back. Your speech and my speech is still FREE-SPEECH and our intention & obligation is to FIX a broken Government system!
The time is now, fire your DNR Deer Manager, create a movement and change the face of Michigan’s Deer Hunting!

Ramblings on the Coming Grouse Season

It has been a long summer. New responsibilities at work and a baby boy in the way in October, our first, along with getting the house ready has eaten up most of the summer.

But the "Honey-do" list is complete and I have gotten the dogs out a few times in preparation for the season.

Miss Gretchen is leading the pack going into the season and today I watched her "swap ends" and stick a grouse while running full bore.

I sincerely hope that moves you as it does me. I pray to God there never comes a day when that doesn't get me as excited as the first time I ever saw a dog do that.

It is an interesting, albeit sad year to watch Panzer run like lighting while his older brother (Gunner) has lost a step and his daddy (Baron) wobbles to stay standing when he is done running.

There is a sad reality that smacks you in the face, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, that dogs get old. But what they lack in speed and agility, they overcome with wisdom and memories that no-one can ever replace or steal from either them, or you.

And I wont take it from Baron either. I won't hunt him til he drops as he will let me know when it is "time." But I won't take away what he lives for by leaving him in a kennel. If he only hunts for 15 minutes, then so be it...he earned it.

But it won't be long and I will walk up on a dog, just a 5 month old pup last year, frozen in time, eyes bulging, body trembling, internal embers stoked by a genetic fire from decades of breeding...I will pause and find the most silence the world has to offer. At that point...the dog, bird, and I will be complete.

I will remember that moment for the rest of my life and probably be able to walk to that very spot in the woods, without a GPS, the rest of my life. Just as I can with the spots where it occurred for dogs past and present.

From one grouse hunter to others...I'll raise a toast to the coming season. May it be safe and the best one you have ever had.

Dennis
